Στη Δημοκρατία των Σαχά, που βρίσκεται στο βορειοανατολικό τμήμα της Σιβηρίας και περιλαμβάνει το Γιακούτσκ, μία από τις πιο κρύες πόλεις στον κόσμο, οι θερμοκρασίες έπεσαν κάτω από τους μείον 50 βαθμούς Κελσίου, σύμφωνα με τους μετεωρολογικούς σταθμούς της περιφέρειας.
Ένα αφύσικα πρόωρο κύμα ψύχους έριξε τις θερμοκρασίες ακόμη και κάτω από τους μείον 50 βαθμούς Κελσίου σε αρκετές περιοχές της Σαχά, μιας εκτεταμένης περιφέρειας λίγο μικρότερης σε έκταση από την Ινδία.
Σχεδόν ολόκληρη η Σαχά βρίσκεται στη ζώνη των αιώνιων πάγων. Στην πρωτεύουσα της περιφέρειας, το Γιακούτσκ, το οποίο βρίσκεται περίπου 5.000 χιλιόμετρα ανατολικά της Μόσχας, η θερμοκρασία ήταν γύρω στους μείον 44 έως μείον 48 βαθμούς Κελσίου.
Οι θερμοκρασίες των 50 βαθμών υπό το μηδέν έχουν γίνει λιγότερο συχνές τα τελευταία χρόνια εξαιτίας της κλιματικής αλλαγής, με τους αιώνιους πάγους να εμφανίζουν όλο και περισσότερες ενδείξεις ότι λιώνουν.
