Για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία του θεσμού η Θεσσαλονίκη είναι η μοναδική ελληνική πόλη που επιτυγχάνει την ένταξή της στο Δίκτυο Δημιουργικών Πόλεων Γαστρονομίας (Creative Cities of Gastronomy) της Unesco. Αυτή η σημαντική διάκριση καθιστά τη Θεσσαλονίκη γαστρονομική πρωτεύουσα, εντάσσοντάς την σε διεθνείς τουριστικούς χάρτες και ενισχύοντας την ταυτότητα και το brand της.
Η γαστρονομία, άλλωστε, είναι βασικό συγκριτικό πλεονέκτημα της Θεσσαλονίκης. Η πόλη έχει αναδειχθεί ως σταυροδρόμι γεύσεων και πολιτισμών, τώρα και με τη σφραγίδα της Unesco.
