Βρίσκεται κτισμένη στις δύο πλευρές του Πορθμού του Ευρίπου, όπου ένα μέρος της καταλαμβάνει τμήμα της νήσου Εύβοιας, το δε άλλο έχει κτιστεί στη Στερεά Ελλάδα.
Στην ηπειρωτική πλευρά της, στον λόφο της Κανήθου, δεσπόζει το Οθωμανικό κάστρο του Καράμπαμπα, το οποίο, μαζί με τη Γέφυρα του Ευρίπου και το μοναδικό φαινόμενο αλλαγής της κατεύθυνσης των υδάτων, ανά έξι ώρες και ενδιάμεσα (περίπου) ένα δεκάλεπτο στασιμότητας (παλίρροια του Ευρίπου), αποτελούν τα σημαντικότερα χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματά της.
