Σαν σήμερα, 7 Σεπτεμβρίου, σημειώθηκε ο σεισμός της Πάρνηθας του 1999, ευρύτερα γνωστός ως σεισμός της Αθήνας. Είχε μέγεθος 5,9 στην κλίμακα Ρίχτερ. Σημειώθηκε στις ς14:56:50 και προκάλεσε 143 θανάτους. Είναι ο φονικότερος σεισμός των τελευταίων 50 ετών και η φυσική καταστροφή με το μεγαλύτερο κόστος σε υλικές ζημιές που έχει συμβεί ποτέ στην Ελλάδα. Το κόστος ξεπέρασε τα 3 δισεκατομμύρια ευρώ.
Ο σεισμός, αν και όχι ιδιαίτερα ισχυρός και με συνολική διάρκεια μόλις 15 δευτερόλεπτα, προκάλεσε πολλές καταστροφές εξαιτίας της εγγύτητάς του στην Αθήνα, με επίκεντρο 18 χιλιόμετρα από το κέντρο της πόλης, ανάμεσα στις Αχαρνές και τον Εθνικό Δρυμό Πάρνηθας, καθώς και του μικρού εστιακού βάθους, από 9 μέχρι 14 χιλιόμετρα. Στην επιφάνεια του εδάφους υπήρξαν ελάχιστες ρηγματώσεις και ήταν δύσκολο να βρεθεί η προέλευση του σεισμού.
