Μετά την ολοκλήρωση της φωλιάς το θηλυκό μέσα σε δυο με τρεις μέρες γεννάει 2 με 8 γαλάζο – πράσινα αβγά, συχνότερα 4 με 5, που θα τα κλωσήσουν και οι δύο γονείς. Οι νεοσσοί εκκολάπτονται μετά από 25 περίπου μέρες. Την φροντίδα τους την αναλαμβάνουν και οι δύο γονείς μαζί ενώ τα μικρά ανεξαρτητοποιούνται οριστικά μετά από 60 περίπου μέρες ενώ σεξουαλικά ωριμάζουν σε ηλικία ενός έτους.
Είναι ένα κοσμοπολίτικο υδρόβιο σαρκοφάγο πτηνό. Στην Ελλάδα είναι καλοκαιρινός επισκέπτης, όπως και σε όλη την Ευρώπη, και φωλιάζει κυρίως στην βόρεια Ελλάδα αλλά μπορούμε να τον βρούμε σε όλους τους μεγάλους υγροβιότοπους της χώρας.
