Πιστά στο ετήσιο ραντεβού τους μαζί μας, τα πρώτα χελιδόνια αερογλιστρούν ήδη στον ουρανό της χώρας μας, φέρνοντας μαζί τους λίγη από την άμμο της ερήμου. Μετά από ένα δύσκολο ταξίδι χιλιάδων χιλιομέτρων από την Αφρική, έχουν φτάσει και πάλι στις γειτονιές μας για να φωλιάσουν!
Ήδη, εργάζονται εντατικά και οι δύο “συζυγοι” για την κατασκευή της φωλιάς, μαζεύοντας σβόλους λάσπης, ενώ ανατρέφουν τα μικρά στα πούπουλα, που στρώνουν με επιμέλεια μέσα στη φωλιά. Οι φωλιές είναι πολύ σημαντικές. Σε μια φωλιά μπορούν να φέρουν στον κόσμο περίπου 10 νέα χελιδόνια κάθε χρόνο.
Αν σκεφτείτε ότι μπορεί να τη χρησιμοποιούν για πάρα πολλά χρόνια, φανταστείτε πόσες γενιές χελιδονιών μπορούν να ανατραφούν σε μία μονάχα φωλιά! Ακόμη, στις φωλιές κουρνιάζουν με ασφάλεια χωρίς να κινδυνεύουν. Αφήνουν δε τόσο στενή είσοδο στη φωλιά, ώστε δύσκολα μπορούν να τρυπώσουν μέσα άλλα ζώα.
Οι φωλιές αποτελούν και καταφύγιο για τις δύσκολες ώρες. Όταν ο καιρός είναι πολύ άσχημος, μέχρι και 14 χελιδόνια μαζί μπορούν να στριμωχτούν μέχρι να καλυτερέψουν οι συνθήκες.
