Απεικονίζει μικρά παιδιά να πίνουν το γάλα τους στο κέντρο γάλακτος του Διεθνούς Ερυθρού Σταυρού κατά τη διάρκεια της Κατοχής από τους Γερμανούς(1942-1943). Η Βούλα-Θεοχάρη Παπαϊωάννου εντάσσεται στο ρεύμα της “Ανθρωπιστικής φωτογραφίας” που βασικός του σκοπός είναι η αφύπνιση των συνειδήσεων ως αντίδοτο στην εξαθλίωση που προκαλεί ο πόλεμος. Ανάμεσα στις πολλές στερήσεις που υπέστη ο ελληνικός λαός, το πιο τρομερό ήταν η πείνα από την οποία πέθαναν χιλιάδες άνθρωποι…
Η έλλειψη τροφίμων οδήγησε σε άνθηση της μαύρης αγοράς, δηλαδή της πώλησης ειδών πρώτης ανάγκης και διατροφής σε υπέρογκες τιμές. Όσοι δεν είχαν τίποτα άλλο να πουλήσουν, πουλούσαν πολύτιμα αντικείμενα ή ακόμα και το ίδιο τους το σπίτι για να εξασφαλίσουν τροφή. Από το φωτογραφικό αρχείο του Μουσείου Μπενάκη.
