Η σπατάλη τροφίμων προκαλεί το ένα δέκατο των αερίων που ευθύνονται για το φαινόμενο του θερμοκηπίου, εκτιμά ο ΟΗΕ, χαρακτηρίζοντάς την «μεγάλη πρόκληση».
Κάθε χρόνο απορρίπτονται περίπου 931 εκατομμύρια τόνοι τροφίμων, με τα περισσότερα να καταλήγουν σε χωματερές όπου αποσυντίθενται. Οι τρεις πρώτες χώρες με τη μεγαλύτερη, κατά κεφαλή, σπατάλη τροφίμων είναι οι ΗΠΑ, η Αυστραλία και η Νέα Ζηλανδία.
