Βλέπετε την Καστοριά σε εκπληκτικές νυχτερινές λήψεις… Είναι χτισμένη πάνω σε χερσόνησο της λίμνης Ορεστιάδας, σε υψόμετρο 703 μ. από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας, ανάμεσα στα βουνά Βίτσι και Γράμμο. Περιβάλλεται από την ομώνυμη λίμνη της και συνδέεται με την ξηρά μέσω μιας ευρύτερης λωρίδας γης από επιχωματώσεις, δίνοντας την εντύπωση νησιού.
Η λίμνη της Καστοριάς βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 620μ. Έχει σχήμα έλλειψης και τα νερά της περιβρέχουν την πόλη. Έχει επιφάνεια 28,655 τετραγωνικά χλμ. μέγιστο μήκος 7.500μ., μέγιστο πλάτος 5.425μ.. και είναι η ογδόη σε μέγεθος λίμνη στην Ελλάδα. Το βάθος της κυμαίνεται από 8-12 μέτρα και η μέση θερμοκρασία είναι 22 βαθμοί Κελσίου.
Η λίμνη έχει πολλές εισροές νερού από τα δυτικά και μια εκροή στον ποταμό Αλιάκμονα. Σε παλαιότερη εποχή η λίμνη περιέβαλλε εξ ολοκλήρου το βραχόβουνο που σχημάτιζε έτσι νησίδα.
