Είναι καλοκαίρι και όπως συνήθιζαν οι Αθηναίοι απολάμβαναν την απογευματινή τους βόλτα στο κέντρο της πόλης. Ελάχιστες γυναίκες βρίσκονται ανάμεσα τους. Οι άντρες είναι καλοντυμένοι, φορούν ψάθινα καπέλα συνομιλούν και διαβάζουν εφημερίδες.
Η πλατεία διαφέρει αρκετά από τη σημερινή της εικόνα. Έχει πλούσια βλάστηση και είναι στρωμένη με χώμα, όμως αποπνέει μια αρχοντιά άλλης εποχής…
Διανοούμενοι, καλλιτέχνες και πολιτικοί πήγαιναν στα καφενεία και αντάλλαζαν ιδέες και απόψεις με τους υπόλοιπους πελάτες. Το πιο γνωστό καφενείο της πλατείας Συντάγματος ήταν το “Ζαχαράτου” το οποίο ξεκίνησε να λειτουργεί το 1888 και ο Γ. Παπανδρέου το χαρακτήρισε ως «το δεύτερο και πιο ελεύθερο κοινοβούλιο της χώρας»!
