Στην προστατευόμενη περιοχή Δέλτα Αξιού έκανε την εμφάνισή της μία καστανόπαπια Tadorna ferruginea. Είδος αρκετά σπάνιο, για την περιοχή του Αξιού ακόμη πιο σπάνιο, καθώς δεν είχε παρατηρηθεί εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια.
Το βασικό χαρακτηριστικό της παπίτσας αυτής, που μας επιτρέπει να την αναγνωρίσουμε πολύ εύκολα, είναι το πολύ εντυπωσιακό πορτοκαλί-καφέ/σκωριόχρωμο πτέρωμά της, σχεδόν σε όλη την επιφάνεια του σώματος (ράχη, λαιμός, στήθος, κοιλιά, υπογάστριο). Εξ’ ου και στην επιστημονική ονομασία της περιλαμβάνεται ο λατινικός όρος ferruginea, από το ferrum (σίδηρος), και σημαίνει αυτός που έχει το χρώμα της σκουριάς του σιδήρου.
