Στο Ολυμπιακό Μουσείο της Αθήνας, όπου στεγάζει, για πρώτη φορά, την Ολυμπιακή κληρονομιά μας, φιλοξενείται ένα αριστούργημα…
Είναι ο χάλκινος δίσκος που προσέφερε ο αρχαίος Έλληνας Ολυμπιονίκης από την Κόρινθο στο αγώνισμα του πεντάθλου, Πόπλιος Ασκληπιάδης, κατά τους 255ους (241 μ.Χ.) Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες στο ιερό της Ολυμπίας.
Στην επιφάνεια και των δύο πλευρών του, που διακοσμούνται από ομόκεντρους κύκλους, υπάρχει από μία εγχάρακτη επιγραφή. Η πρώτη αναφέρει ότι ο δίσκος είναι ανάθημα στον Ολύμπιο Δία του Κορίνθιου Πόπλιου Ασκληπιάδη, νικητή του πεντάθλου στην 255η Ολυμπιάδα (241 μ. Χ.), και η δεύτερη είναι η επικύρωση του αξιωματούχου στον οποίο παραδόθηκε το ανάθημα.
Σε αυτήν αναφέρεται η 456η Ολυμπιάδα. Η διαφορά στην αρίθμηση των Ολυμπιάδων δεν οφείλεται σε λάθος, αλλά σε διαφορετικό τρόπο υπολογισμού τους, αφού στη δεύτερη περίπτωση γίνεται με βάση το 1580 π.Χ. και όχι το καθιερωμένο 776 π.Χ.
