Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Γάμου σήμερα και γάμος χωρίς λουτροφόρο δεν γινόταν στην αρχαία Αθήνα. To πολυτελές αυτό πήλινο αγγείο μετέφερε το νερό από την πηγή της Καλλιρρόης για το προγαμιαίο λουτρό της νύφης ή του γαμπρού.
H λουτροφόρος-αμφορέας είχε δύο κάθετες λαβές και προοριζόταν για τον γαμπρό. Η συγκεκριμένη χρονολογείται γύρω στο 525 π.Χ. και στο σώμα της εικονίζεται μια παράσταση γαμήλια πομπής: παριστάνεται η μεταφορά της νύφης, με τέθριππο στο σπίτι του γαμπρού, με τη συνοδεία συγγενών και φίλων.
Η άλλη παραλλαγή ήταν η λουτροφόρος-υδρία, με δύο οριζόντιες και μία κάθετη λαβή, για τη νύφη. Αυτή χρονολογείται γύρω στο 560 π.Χ. και στο λαιμό της εικονίζεται μια γυναίκα ντυμένη με πέπλο και ιμάτιο να στέκεται ανάμεσα σε δύο αντικριστές Σφίγγες.
Και οι δύο ανακαλύφθηκαν το 1957 στο ιερό της Νύμφης στη νότια πλαγιά της Ακρόπολης, εκεί όπου κατέληγαν ως αφιερώματα στην προστάτιδα του γάμου και των γαμήλιων τελετών.
