Στην καρδιά της λακωνικής Μάνης, με βλέμμα στη θάλασσα της Μεσογείου, “ξεφυτρώνει” ένας εντυπωσιακός παραδοσιακός οικισμός… Το χωριό της Βάθειας που είναι το πιο φωτογραφημένο ολόκληρης της Μάνης.
Οι ιστορικές πηγές μιλούν γι’ αυτήν από τα μέσα του 16ου αιώνα. Ο σημερινός οικισμός διαμορφώθηκε στον λόφο κυρίως μετά τον 18ο αιώνα, ήκμασε τον 19ο και άρχισε να φθίνει από τις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Τον 19ο αιώνα ο οικισμός είχε 300 περίπου κατοίκους οι οποίοι είχαν ως ασχολίες τη στοιχειώδη καλλιέργεια δημητριακών, την κτηνοτροφία, το κυνήγι αλλά και την πειρατεία.
Από τις πρώτες δεκαετίες του αιώνα μας άρχισε η φυγή των κατοίκων προς τις πόλεις και έτσι το 1979 μέσα στον παραδοσιακό οικισμό απέμειναν μόνο 11 κάτοικοι… Πρακτικά η Βάθεια ήταν ένας εγκαταλελειμμένος οικισμός. Ο ΕΟΤ ξανάδωσε ζωή στον οικισμό αναστηλώνοντας και μετατρέποντας σε ξενώνες πολλά κτίρια.
