Τα λιβάδια Ποδειδωνίας αποτελούν πολύτιμο οικότοπο και για τα σφουγγάρια!
Τα σφουγγάρια διαδραματίζουν σημαντικό ρόλο στο θαλάσσιο περιβάλλον, καθώς φιλτράρουν και καθαρίζουν το νερό κι αποτελούν με τη σειρά τους καταφύγια μικρών ψαριών και άλλων μικροοργανισμών. Από την άλλη, η ζωή στα λιβάδια είναι πολύ συμφέρουσα και για τα σφουγγάρια, καθώς τους εξασφαλίζει προστασία από τα ρεύματα και τις καιρικές συνθήκες.
Τα σφουγγάρια απειλούνται με εξαφάνιση λόγω της κλιματικής αλλαγής και των ανθρώπινων δραστηριοτήτων και η θέασή τους είναι πλέον πολύ σπάνια!
Παρόλα αυτά η περιβαλλοντική οργάνωση iSea είχε την τύχη να συναντήσει τους πανέμορφους αυτούς οργανισμούς των ελληνικών θαλασσών, κάποιοι από τους οποίους προστατεύονται με βάση τη Σύμβαση της Βαρκελώνης!
