Είκοσι οκτώ χρόνια έχουν περάσει από τον Ιανουάριο του 1997, όταν μια πολυάριθμη ομάδα αρχαιολόγων, αρχιτεκτόνων, συντηρητών και εργατών ξεκίνησε την ανασκαφική έρευνα στο «οικόπεδο Μακρυγιάννη», τον περίκλειστο χώρο γύρω από το Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, που τότε κανείς δεν γνώριζε τι έκρυβε στα σπλάχνα του.
Η ανασκαφή διήρκησε πολλά χρόνια, συνεχίστηκε ακόμη και κάτω από αντίξοες συνθήκες και αποκάλυψε τελικά μια ολόκληρη αρχαία γειτονιά της Αθήνας.
Τα αρχιτεκτονικά κατάλοιπα που ήρθαν στο φως οδήγησαν στον επανασχεδιασμό του Μουσείου Ακρόπολης. Η ανασκαφή ενσωματώθηκε στη βάση του και το 2024 απέκτησε και το μουσείο της. Το «Μουσείο της Ανασκαφής» αποτελεί σήμερα έναν επιπλέον εκθεσιακό χώρο του Μουσείου, όπου η αρχαία Αθήνα «ζωντανεύει»… Φωτογραφία από Μουσείο Ακρόπολης.
