Σαν σήμερα, στις 25 Οκτωβρίου 1822, αρχίζει η πρώτη πολιορκία του Μεσολογγίου…
Το Μεσολόγγι, μια μικρή ναυτική και εμπορική πόλη της Δυτικής Στερεάς Ελλάδας, έγινε, παγκοσμίως, διάσημη και ταυτόσημη της ελευθερίας χάρη στην ηρωική της αντίσταση, στα χρόνια του Αγώνα. Στις 25 Οκτωβρίου 1822 αρχίζει η πρώτη πολιορκία της, η οποία λήγει στις 31 Δεκεμβρίου του ίδιου έτους, οπότε οι οθωμανικές δυνάμεις αναγκάζονται να αποχωρήσουν.
Το Μεσολόγγι θα πολιορκηθεί ξανά το 1825-1826, και η πολιορκία θα ολοκληρωθεί με την ηρωική Έξοδο των κατοίκων και των υπερασπιστών της στις 10 Απριλίου 1826.
Το έργο της φωτογραφίας είναι από τη ζωφόρο της αίθουσας «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος», στη Βουλή των Ελλήνων: «Ο Μαυροκορδάτος υπερασπίζεται το Μεσολόγγι». Το έργο φιλοτέχνησαν Έλληνες και Βαυαροί ζωγράφοι, με βάση τα σχέδια του Βαυαρού γλύπτη Λούντβιχ Μίκαελ φον Σβαντχάλερ.
