Έντονο είναι το κύμα καύσωνα που πλήττει τη νότια και την ανατολική Αυστραλία. Το Μετεωρολογικό Γραφείο (BoM) της Αυστραλίας αναμένει ότι η θερμοκρασία θα ανέλθει σε επίπεδα ρεκόρ τις ερχόμενες μέρες λόγω του καύσωνα. Επόμενο ήταν πολλοί να τρέξουν στις παραλίες και τις πισίνες για να δροσιστούν.
Σύμφωνα με τους μετεωρολόγους, μολονότι η απότομη άνοδος της θερμοκρασίας και ο καύσωνας είναι φυσιολογικό γι’ αυτή την εποχή του χρόνου, στην Αυστραλία, αυτό που κάνει αυτή την ξαφνική άνοδο της θερμοκρασίας να αποτελεί εξαίρεση είναι οι θερμοκρασίες έως και 18 βαθμών Κελσίου πάνω από τον μέσο όρο.
Σύμφωνα με το Euronews στα δυτικά της πολιτείας της Νέας Νότιας Ουαλίας και στα βόρεια της Βικτώριας, η θερμοκρασία άγγιξε τους 45 βαθμούς Κελσίου. Στην μικρή πόλη Marree στα βόρεια της Νότιας Αυστραλίας ο υδράργυρος έφτασε στους 47,5°C. Στην ίδια πολιτεία, στο Roxby Downs το θερμόμετρο έδειξε 47,4°C.
