Τότε ο εφευρέτης της κινητής τηλεφωνίας, Αμερικανός Μάρτιν Κούπερ, δούλευε στη Motorola στο Σικάγο και ανέπτυξε ένα τηλέφωνο χωρίς καλώδια, με το οποίο μπορούσε κάποιος να τηλεφωνήσει παντού.
Αυτό κινητό τηλέφωνο ήταν 33 εκατοστά, τεράστιο για τα σημερινά δεδομένα, και ζύγιζε ένα κιλό, βαρύ και ασήκωτο. Η δε μπαταρία του έφτανε για συνδιαλέξεις το πολύ 20 λεπτών. Επομένως δεν ήταν καθόλου εύχρηστο…
Ο Μάρτιν Κούπερ δήλωσε ότι επρόκειτο για μια ανάγκη να απελευθερωθεί αυτός και όλοι μας από τα ενοχλητικά καλώδια του τηλεφώνου: «Η ανάγκη είναι η μητέρα κάθε εφεύρεσης. Είχα την ιδέα τον Δεκέμβριο του 1972».
Η εφεύρεση κόστισε 4.000 δολάρια και επισήμως ονομαζόταν Dynatec 8000. Σιγά σιγά η ιδέα της μαζικής του παραγωγής επηρέασε τη βελτίωσή του, τόσο στις λειτουργίες, όσο και στο μέγεθός του.
