Βλέπετε μία σπάνια φωτογραφία του φωτογράφου, Albert Meyer, από το αγώνισμα της ξιφασκίας κατά τους πρώτους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες της Αθήνας, το 1896, που διεξήχθη στον προαύλιο χώρο του Ζαππείου Μεγάρου.
Στους θερινούς Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του 1896 διεξήχθησαν τρία αγωνίσματα ξιφασκίας ανδρών. Διοργανώθηκαν στο Ζάππειο Μέγαρο, στις 7 και 9 Απριλίου. Το αγώνισμα του ξίφους μονομαχίας (επέ) ματαιώθηκε. Συνολικά, 15 αθλητές από τέσσερις χώρες έλαβαν μέρος, από τους οποίους οι οκτώ κέρδισαν μετάλλιο. Η νίκη κρινόταν στις τρεις επαφές.
Η ξιφασκία ήταν ένα από τα πρώτα αθλήματα που παίχτηκαν στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες. Η ξιφασκία έχει τις ρίζες της στην ανάπτυξη της ξιφομαχίας για μονομαχίες και αυτοάμυνα.
Η αγωνιστική ξιφασκία είναι μία από τις πέντε δραστηριότητες που έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε όλους τους σύγχρονους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, οι άλλες τέσσερις είναι ο στίβος, η ποδηλασία, η κολύμβηση και η ενόργανη.
