Είναι από το πολύ μακρινό 1920 όπου ένα κοπάδι από κατσίκια διασχίζει τη σημερινή οδό Βουκουρεστίου στο Κολωνάκι.
Το αρχικό όνομα του δρόμου ήταν οδός Αγχεσμού από το αρχαίο όνομα μίας από τις κορυφές του Λυκαβηττού. Τη σημερινή ονομασία της την οφείλει στη συνθήκη του Βουκουρεστίου, το 1913, μέσω της οποίας έληξε ο Β΄ Βαλκανικός Πόλεμος.
Ήταν η πρώτη οδός στο κέντρο των Αθηνών που πεζοδρομήθηκε, το 1978
Σήμερα η Βουκουρεστίου είναι γνωστή ως η λεωφόρος της μόδας, φιλοξενώντας καταστήματα υψηλής αισθητικής και πολυτελών ειδών. Έχει ταυτιστεί με την εξέλιξη της μόδας στην Ελλάδα από τη δεκαετία του 1950 και αποτελεί πόλο έλξης για τις τάσεις της αμερικανικής και ευρωπαϊκής μόδας.
