Σαν σήμερα, στις 18 Αυγούστου 1917, ξέσπασε στη Θεσσαλονίκη η πιο καταστροφική πυρκαγιά στην ιστορία της πόλης….
Η φωτιά ξεκίνησε τυχαία από ένα προσφυγικό σπίτι, στην πλατεία Μουσχουντή και εξαπλώθηκε ραγδαία λόγω των ξύλινων κατασκευών, των ισχυρών ανέμων και της έλλειψης οργανωμένης κατάσβεσης.
Μέσα σε δύο μέρες:
— πάνω από 70.000 κάτοικοι έμειναν άστεγοι
— μεγάλο μέρος του εμπορικού κέντρου καταστράφηκε, ιδιαίτερα η εβραϊκή συνοικία
Η πυρκαγιά άλλαξε οριστικά τη φυσιογνωμία της Θεσσαλονίκης. Η ανοικοδόμηση ξεκίνησε άμεσα, με σχέδιο της Διεθνούς Επιτροπής Σχεδιασμού υπό τον Γάλλο αρχιτέκτονα Ερνέστ Εμπράρ. Η φωτογραφία από τις ψηφιακές συλλογές του Ν. Οικονόμου και το Ιστορικό Αρχείο Μακεδονίας.
