Η Μύκονος ήταν από τα πρώτα ελληνικά νησιά που αναπτύχθηκε τουριστικά. Ήδη από τη δεκαετία του 1960 συνέρρεαν μαζικά τουρίστες προς το νησί. Σήμερα η νυχτερινή ζωή της Μυκόνου θεωρείται από τις πιο ζωντανές και ενεργές στην Ευρώπη.
Παλαιότερα η Μύκονος ήταν σπουδαίος κυνηγότοπος για ορτύκια και τρυγόνια. Επίσης οι κάτοικοι ασχολούνται και με την αλιεία, που δεν καλύπτει τις ανάγκες της νήσου.
